幸せって何？

A woman in her 40s came into my office, today.
"I'm going to fight against cancer, so I'm not sure when I come here next time."
She took my breath away.
I didn't know what to say.
She raises two daughters without her husband's help.
Why does she have to suffer?
What's wrong with her?
All I could do was listening to her anxiety.
There is one more woman who used to be a co-worker.
She also fights against a relapse of malignant lymphoma.
Her optimistic character helped herself overcome two years ago.
But again!
She says "It's OK. I'll do the same thing I did before."
To be rich doesn't mean happy.
I know there are good days and bad days.
I hope they will survive.

今日私のオフィスに４０代の女性がいらっしゃった。「これから癌と闘うので、次回いつここに来られるか分かりません。」私は絶句した。何と言って良いのか分からなかった。彼女は１人で２人の娘達を育てている。何故彼女が苦しまなければいけないのか？彼女が何をしたというのか？私の出来た事は彼女の話を聞いてあげる事だけだった。もう１人、かつての仕事仲間だった人が悪性リンパ腫の再発が見つかった。彼女の明るい性格で２年前は乗り切ったが、再発とは！でも彼女は言う。「大丈夫。また同じ事をすれば良いんだから。」お金があっても幸せとは限らない。人生には良い時も、悪い時も有るのは知っているけど、生還して欲しい。神様！彼女達を守って！

I often say this to students in trouble: When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. A "lemon" is a yellow fruit with very SOUR juice, so it is also used to mean "something BAD." But the problems with the women you mentioned are of a different kind, at least not as easy as those of students. I can understand you lost your words in front of them, and I would have, too. Medical science can't do everything even today when human beings work in space. Therefore, medical doctors should also be mental doctors.

A certain professor said to the students:
There are 4 kinds of doctors. The best doctor is skillful and kind, the worst doctor is awkward and unkind, then what sort of doctor would be the second? It's premature but kind doctor. You can become the second one at once if you want. I cannot forget the sentence.

There are many kinds of teachers and many kinds of doctors. You may not choose your teachers of the school and university, but you can choose your doctor. Can you entrust your life to them? This is the problem.
